Crochet Brimmed Beanie (Baseball Cap Style)

1. 1CrownDc rounds start with ch 2 (doesn't count) and are joined with a sl st to the first dc. Round 1: 12 dc in a magic ring. (12) Round 2: inc in each st. (24) Round 3: *1 dc, inc* 12 times. (36) Round 4: *2 dc, inc* 12 times. (48) Round 5: *3 dc, inc* 12 times. (60) Round 6: *4 dc, inc* 12 times. (72)
2. 2Body and bandRounds 7-13: ch 2, dc in each st, sl st to first dc. (72) Rounds 14-15: ch 1 (doesn't count), sc in each st, sl st to first sc. (72) Don't cut the yarn; just remove the hook and hold the loop with a marker. The start of the round is the centre back.
3. 3Visor (top layer)Counting from the start of the round, stitches 25 to 48 (24 sts) sit at the centre front; mark both ends of this section. Join new yarn in stitch 25. Row 1: sc in each of the 24 sts. Turn. (24) Row 2: ch 1, sc2tog, 20 sc, sc2tog. (22) Row 3: ch 1, sc2tog, 18 sc, sc2tog. (20) Row 4: ch 1, sc2tog, 16 sc, sc2tog. (18) Row 5: ch 1, sc2tog, 14 sc, sc2tog. (16) Row 6: ch 1, sc2tog, 12 sc, sc2tog. (14) Fasten off.
4. 4Visor (bottom layer)As a separate piece, ch 25. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (24) Work Rows 2-6 as for the top layer. (14) Fasten off leaving 40 cm. Lay the bottom layer on the plastic, trace around it 0.5 cm inside the edges and cut out the insert.
5. 5Joining the layersPlace the plastic between the two layers, with the bottom layer's foundation chain on the inside of the hat at the base of the top layer. Using the long tail, sew the bottom layer's chain edge to the inside of the hat along the base of the visor. Then hold the outer edges of the two layers together.
6. 6Edging roundPut the held loop back on the hook. From the start of the round, sc along the back edge of the hat; at the visor, working through the edge stitches of both layers together, work 1 sc in each row end and 1 sc in each stitch along the front edge, then down the other side and around the rest of the back edge. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
7. 7FinishingWeave in all ends. Gently bend the visor into a curve by hand; the plastic holds the shape. When the hat needs washing, hand wash in lukewarm water and dry with the visor kept flat.
