1. 1Cast onUsing the long-tail method, cast on 120 sts onto the 3.5 mm circular needle. Join without twisting and place the contrasting marker for the round start. (120 sts)
2. 2Twisted ribEvery round: *k1tbl, p1* 60 times. (120 sts) The twisted knit stitches make the ribs crisper and firmer. Work until the hat measures 18 cm from the cast-on edge (about 61 rounds). 7 cm of this will fold up to form a double brim.
3. 3Crown set-upNext round: *k13, k2tog, pm* 8 times (the last marker is the round start). (112 sts) From here the crown is worked in stockinette. There are 14 sts between markers.
4. 4Crown decreasesDecrease round: *knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog* 8 times (8 sts decreased per round). First alternate one plain knit round and one decrease round 4 times: 104, 96, 88 and 80 sts. Then work every round as a decrease round with no plain rounds between: 72, 64, 56, 48, 40, 32, 24, 16 and finally *k2tog* to 8 sts. Change to DPNs as the stitches decrease.
5. 5Closing the topCut the yarn leaving 20 cm, thread it through the remaining 8 sts and pull tight. Take the yarn to the inside and secure it. You should see a neat eight-pointed star on the stockinette crown.
6. 6FinishingWeave in the ends on the inside. The inside of the brim shows when folded, so weave the cast-on tail carefully and vertically through the rib. Soak the hat, squeeze gently, fold the 7 cm brim and dry it over a head-sized bowl or balloon.
