1. 1Cast onUsing a stretchy method (long-tail), cast on 112 sts onto the 40 cm circular needle. Join in the round without twisting and place a beginning-of-round marker. (112 sts)
2. 2Ribbed bodyEvery round: *k2, p2* 28 times. (112 sts) Repeat this round until the hat measures 27 cm from the cast-on edge (about 81 rounds). The brim and body are worked in the same rib, so the pattern never changes; just remember to measure.
3. 3Crown decreasesSwitch to DPNs when the stitches get tight on the circular needle. Round 1: *k2, p2tog* 28 times. (84 sts) Rounds 2-3: *k2, p1*. (84 sts) Round 4: *k2tog, p1* 28 times. (56 sts) Round 5: *k1, p1*. (56 sts) Round 6: *k2tog* 28 times. (28 sts) Round 7: knit all sts. (28 sts) Round 8: *k2tog* 14 times. (14 sts)
4. 4Closing the topCut the yarn leaving 25 cm. Thread it through the remaining 14 sts twice with the yarn needle, pull tight and take the yarn through the hole to the inside. Secure it under a few stitches and knot.
5. 5Pom-pomWrap yarn densely around an 8-9 cm pom-pom maker or two cardboard rings with a hole in the middle; the more you wrap, the fuller the pom-pom. Cut around the edge, tie very tightly around the middle with a 40 cm length of yarn and trim into a ball. Pass both ends of the tie through the top of the hat and knot them securely inside.
6. 6FinishingWeave the cast-on tail vertically through the purl columns of the rib. Soak the hat in lukewarm water, squeeze out the water and dry it over a balloon or head form. Try not to wet the pom-pom; you can attach it after the hat has dried.
