Knitted Baby Romper

Tap a section when you finish it.

1. 1LegsCast on 40/44/48 sts on double-pointed needles and join in the round; the round starts at the inner leg. Work 3 cm of *k1, p1* rib. Change to stockinette and work an increase round every 5th/6th/6th round: k1, M1L, knit to last st, M1R, k1. Increase 6/6/7 times (52/56/62). Continue straight until the leg measures 14/16/19 cm from the start of the rib. Place the sts on waste yarn and make the second leg the same way, leaving it on the needles.
2. 2Joining the legsWith the circular needle, knit the 52/56/62 sts of the first leg starting from its round start, cast on 2 sts (front crotch), knit the 52/56/62 sts of the second leg starting from its round start, cast on 1 st, place marker, cast on 1 more st (back crotch). Join in the round (108/116/128). This marker is the new round start and marks the center back.
3. 3Back short rowsShort rows are worked at the back for diaper room. Pair 1: k20 past the marker, turn and make a DS; purl until you are 20 sts past the marker on the other side, turn and make a DS. Pair 2: work the same, turning 6 sts before the previous turn (14 sts). Pair 3: turn at 8 sts. Then knit one full round, working each double stitch as one stitch.
4. 4BodyKnit in the round until the body measures 18/20/22 cm from the crotch join (measured at center front). On the last round, knit 27/29/32 sts from the round start and stop at the side; the next 54/58/64 sts are the front and the remaining 54/58/64 sts are the back. Place the back sts on waste yarn.
5. 5Front bibThe front is worked flat in rows. Row 1 (RS): bind off 4/4/5 sts, knit to end. Row 2: bind off 4/4/5 sts, k3, purl to last 3 sts, k3 (46/50/54). Decrease row (RS): k3, ssk, knit to last 5 sts, k2tog, k3. WS: k3, purl, k3. Decrease 3 times (40/44/48). The 3 edge sts form a garter band around the armhole. When the armhole measures 7/8/9 cm, work 6 rows of garter across all sts and bind off loosely.
6. 6Back and strapsPlace the back sts on the needle, rejoin the yarn and bind off and decrease for the armholes as for the front (40/44/48). When the armhole measures 9/10/11 cm, work 4 rows of garter across all sts. Next RS row: k8/9/10, bind off 24/26/28 sts, k8/9/10. Work each strap separately in garter for 11/12/13 cm. Buttonhole row: k3/3/4, yo, k2tog, k3/4/4. Knit 2 more rows and bind off.
7. 7Buttons and finishingClose the small gaps at the crotch join with the tails and weave in all ends. Bring the straps over the shoulders from the back and sew the buttons to the inside of the front garter edge, opposite the buttonholes, with doubled strong thread, passing through 6-8 times and wrapping a short shank. Wash the romper in lukewarm water and dry flat.
