Knitted Thumbless Baby Mittens

1. 1RibLeaving a 30 cm tail for seaming, cast on 28/30/32 sts. Work *k1, p1* rib on every row for 3/3.5/4 cm. The rib hugs the wrist and keeps the mitten from slipping off.
2. 2BodyChange to stockinette (knit RS, purl WS). Work 4/4.5/5 cm from the end of the rib, ending with a WS row.
3. 3Top decreasesThink of the stitches as two equal halves (14/15/16); you decrease at both ends of each half. Decrease row 1 (RS): *k1, ssk, k8/9/10, k2tog, k1* twice (24/26/28). Row 2 and WS rows: purl. Row 3: *k1, ssk, k6/7/8, k2tog, k1* twice (20/22/24). Row 5: *k1, ssk, k4/5/6, k2tog, k1* twice (16/18/20). Row 6: purl.
4. 4Closing the topDivide the stitches evenly over two needles (8/9/10 each). Fold the mitten in half with right sides facing inward; hold the two needles parallel and work a three-needle bind-off, knitting one stitch from each needle together. The top looks rounded and seam-free.
5. 5Side seamWith the cast-on tail, sew the mitten from top to wrist with mattress stitch. Do not pull the seam tight along the rib so the wrist stays stretchy.
6. 6FinishingTurn the mitten right side out and weave all ends firmly into the seam where baby's fingers cannot catch them. Knit the second mitten the same way. Dampen lightly and dry flat.
