1. 1Cast onUsing the long-tail method, cast on 34 sts onto 8 mm needles. Leave a 50 cm tail; you'll use it to seam the ends later. Double moss stitch needs a multiple of 4 + 2 sts (4 x 8 + 2 = 34). (34 sts)
2. 2Double moss stitch (4 rows)Row 1 (RS): k2, *p2, k2* 8 times. (34 sts) Row 2 (WS): p2, *k2, p2* 8 times. (34 sts) Row 3: p2, *k2, p2* 8 times. (34 sts) Row 4: k2, *p2, k2* 8 times. (34 sts) The first two rows look like 2x2 rib, then the squares shift over the next two rows to make a checkerboard texture.
3. 3BodyRepeat Rows 1-4 a total of 67 times (268 rows, about 149 cm). This texture doesn't curl and looks the same on both sides. Join new balls at the beginning of a row.
4. 4Bind offWith the RS facing, bind off loosely in pattern, working the stitches as on Row 1 (k2, p2...). Cut the yarn leaving 50 cm.
5. 5Joining the endsBring the ends together into a loop with the RS outside, making sure it isn't twisted. For a mobius loop, give one end a half twist before joining. Lay the bind-off edge against the cast-on edge and, using the long tail, sew them together edge to edge, matching stitch to stitch. Don't pull the seam tight; the join must stay stretchy.
6. 6FinishingWeave the ends into the seam. Dampen the scarf lightly and dry it flat. Wear it wrapped twice around the neck, or pull the second loop up over your head as a hood.
