Crochet Cowl

Instructions

Tap a section when you finish it.

1. 1Foundation ringCh 84. Without twisting the chain, join into a ring with a sl st into the first ch. Check that the ring slips easily over your head; if it's tight, add chains in groups of 4 (the count must stay even). (84 ch)
2. 2Round 1Ch 1 (doesn't count), *sc in next ch, dc in next ch* 42 times. Join with a sl st to the first sc and place a marker in the first stitch. (84 sts)
3. 3Griddle patternRound 2: ch 2 (doesn't count), *dc in the sc of the previous round, sc in the dc* 42 times; sl st to first dc. (84 sts) Round 3: ch 1 (doesn't count), *sc in the dc of the previous round, dc in the sc* 42 times; sl st to first sc. (84 sts) Even rounds start with a dc and odd rounds with an sc. Each stitch sits on top of its opposite, creating a dense, nubbly texture.
4. 4BodyAlternate Rounds 2 and 3 for 22 rounds in total (about 24 cm). The join may drift slightly; move the marker up to the first stitch of each round to keep track.
5. 5Edging roundsTop edge: ch 1, sc in each st, sl st to first sc. (84 sc) Fasten off. Bottom edge: join the yarn on the other side of the foundation chain, ch 1, sc in each ch, sl st to first sc. (84 sc) With both edges matching, the cowl can be worn either way up.
6. 6FinishingWeave the ends through the stitches. Steam the cowl lightly, lay it flat and let it dry. If the edges ripple, smoothing them by hand while damp is enough.
