Crochet Zippered Coin Purse

1. 1CirclesMake one circle in each color. Join each round with sl st to the first sc and start with ch 1 (does not count). Round 1: 6 sc in MR (6). Round 2: inc in each st (12). Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x6 (18). Round 4: *sc 2, inc* x6 (24). Rounds 5-10: continue adding 1 sc between increases each round: *sc 3, inc* (30), *sc 4, inc* (36), *sc 5, inc* (42), *sc 6, inc* (48), *sc 7, inc* (54), *sc 8, inc* (60). Do not cut the yarn of the second circle.
2. 2Staggering for a round circleIf you stack the increases in the same place every round, the circle turns into a hexagon. To avoid this, start the repeat with the inc on even-numbered rounds, for example round 6: inc, *sc 4, inc* x5, sc 4. The stitch count stays the same; only the position of the increases shifts.
3. 3JoiningPlace the two circles wrong sides together and match up their stitches. With the yarn of the second circle, work 36 sc through both layers over 36 stitches; this is the bottom of the purse. Over the remaining 24 stitches, work 24 sc into the front circle only, then at the join cross over to the back circle, work sc into its 24 stitches and sl st to the first sc (36 + 24 + 24 = 84 sc).
4. 4ZipperPlace the closed zipper in the opening and pin the zipper tape on each side of the teeth to the inside of the two edges. With sewing thread, sew first one side and then the other with small, close backstitches just below the last sc round. Fold the zipper ends inward and secure them with a few stitches.
5. 5Optional loopJoin yarn at one side of the purse where the zipper ends, ch 10, sl st into the same stitch, and work 12 sc over the chain for a sturdy loop. You can attach a key ring to the loop.
6. 6FinishingWeave in the ends between the two layers. Open and close the zipper several times to check it doesn't catch; if the crochet touches the teeth, move the stitching slightly inward. Clean the cotton purse by wiping it with a damp cloth.
