Crochet Ribbed Beanie (Post Stitch)

1. 1BeginningCh 72 and join into a ring with a sl st into the first ch, without twisting. The ring will look a bit smaller than your head; the rib will stretch. (72 ch) Round 1: ch 2 (doesn't count), dc in each ch, sl st to first dc. (72)
2. 2Post stitch ribEvery round starts with ch 2 (doesn't count); the first post stitch goes around the post of the stitch you joined into. Round 2: *2 FPdc, 2 BPdc* 18 times, sl st to first FPdc. (72) Rounds 3-15: as Round 2, working FPdc around the FPdc and BPdc around the BPdc of the previous round. (72) This creates vertical 2x2 ribs.
3. 3CheckAfter Round 15 the hat should measure about 19 cm. For a longer hat or a folded brim, repeat Round 2 three or four more times. Make sure the ribs climb in a straight line; if they slant, you're starting the round in the wrong stitch.
4. 4Crown decreasesRound 16: *FPdc dec over the 2 FPdc, 2 BPdc* 18 times. (54) Round 17: *1 FPdc, BPdc dec over the 2 BPdc* 18 times. (36) Round 18: *dec working 1 FPdc and 1 BPdc together* 18 times. (18) For a post decrease, work each post stitch until 2 loops remain (3 loops on the hook), then yarn over and pull through all of them.
5. 5Closing the topCut the yarn leaving 25 cm. Thread it through the front loops of the remaining 18 sts, pull tight and knot several times on the inside.
6. 6FinishingWeave the starting tail and the top yarn in on the inside. Make a 9 cm pom-pom and sew it firmly to the top if you like. Dampening the hat briefly and drying it over a balloon helps the ribs sit neatly.
