Crochet Motif Stole (Shoulder Wrap)

1. 1Motif: flower centreRound 1: in a magic ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc; sl st to 3rd ch. (16 dc) Round 2: ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 3, skip 1 st, sc in next st* 7 times, ch 3, sl st to first sc. (8 sc, 8 loops) Round 3: sl st into first loop, 1 petal in each loop; sl st to first sc. (8 petals)
2. 2Motif: behind the petals and squaring offRound 4: fold the petals forward. Sl st from the back around the post of the first sc of Round 2; *ch 5, BPsc around the next sc of Round 2* 7 times, ch 5, sl st to first BPsc. (8 loops behind the petals) Round 5: sl st into first loop; ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same loop [corner]; 5 dc in next loop; *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next loop, 5 dc in next loop* 3 times; sl st to 3rd ch. (44 dc; 11 dc along each side between corners)
3. 3Last round of the first motifRound 6: sl st into the corner space; ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner; *[ch 3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc] 5 times, ch 3, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next corner* 3 times; [ch 3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc] 5 times, ch 3, sl st to first sc. Fasten off. Each side has 6 ch-3 loops plus a ch-3 loop at each corner. This first motif is a complete motif.
4. 4Joining as you goWork Rounds 1-5 of every following motif as written. On Round 6, along each side that touches a neighbouring motif, replace each 'ch 3' with: ch 1, sl st into the matching loop of the neighbour, ch 1. Join the corner loops the same way. Each joined side has 8 join points (2 corners + 6 side loops). Where several motifs meet at a corner, sl st into the join point already made there.
5. 5LayoutArrange the motifs in 4 columns x 15 rows, 60 motifs in total. Work the first row left to right: motif 1 is complete, motifs 2-4 join along one side. In later rows, the first motif of each row joins to the motif above, and the others join along two sides to the motif above and the motif to the left. Every 10 motifs, lay the stole flat to check that no joins are twisted.
6. 6EdgingJoin the yarn in an outer corner loop of the stole. Along the outer edge: 3 sc in each ch-3 loop; (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in the loops at the four outer corners of the stole; where two motifs meet, 2 sc in each of the two joined corner loops. Join with a sl st to the first sc and fasten off.
7. 7Finishing and blockingEach motif leaves two tails; weave them into the motif's own rounds, away from the join points. Soak the stole in lukewarm water, remove excess water and lay it out to 44 x 165 cm on the mats. Pin out the corners and lacy loops of every motif and remove the pins once completely dry.
