Crochet Granny Triangle Shawl

1. 1BeginningWith colour A, make a magic ring. Row 1: ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, 3 dc in ring. Pull the ring closed and turn. (2 clusters) The central ch-2 space is the spine; the shawl grows symmetrically on either side of it.
2. 2Row structureEvery row: ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the same stitch (edge cluster); 1 cluster in each space between clusters of the previous row; (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the spine; 1 cluster in each space between clusters after the spine; 3 dc in the last stitch (top of the previous row's ch 3). Turn. Each row adds 1 cluster to each half: Row n has 2n clusters in total.
3. 3First rowsRow 2: ch 3, 2 dc in same st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in spine, 3 dc in last st. (4 clusters) Row 3: ch 3, 2 dc in same st, 3 dc in next space, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in spine, 3 dc in next space, 3 dc in last st. (6 clusters) From Row 4 the pattern becomes automatic; each half gains one more space between clusters.
4. 4Colour stripesChange colour every 2 rows, repeating A, B, C. Change colour in the last stitch of a row: work the final pull-through of the last dc with the new colour, cut the old yarn leaving 15 cm. You'll weave in the tails along the edges later.
5. 5BodyWork 50 rows in total (the last row has 100 clusters). Count your clusters every 10 rows; Row n should have 2n. Working the last two rows in colour A gives the shawl a framed look.
6. 6EdgingContinuing with colour A without turning, work along the top edge: 2 sc beside each row-end dc (about 100 sc). At the spine, work 1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc and continue the same way along the other top edge. Fasten off.
7. 7FinishingWeave the tails from the colour changes through the edging sc. Soak the shawl, remove excess water, pin it into a triangle and let it dry. For acrylic yarn, light steam without touching the iron is enough.
