1. 1BeginningCast on 9 sts onto the circular needle. Row 1 (RS): k3, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k3. (13 sts) Row 2 (WS): k3, yo, purl to last 3 sts, yo, k3. (15 sts) The 3 sts at each edge are knit on every row and form a neat garter strip along the neck edge.
2. 2Crescent increasesRS row: k3, yo, k1, yo, knit to last 4 sts, yo, k1, yo, k3. (4 sts increased) WS row: k3, yo, purl to last 3 sts, yo, k3. (2 sts increased) Every two rows add 6 sts. Because the edges grow faster, the shawl becomes a crescent rather than a triangle.
3. 3BodyWork Rows 3 to 92 alternating RS and WS rows (90 rows). You should have 285 sts at the end of Row 92 (stitch count after any row = 9 + 3 x row number). Use this formula to check your count at any time.
4. 4Garter and eyelet borderRows 93-112 are the border; the increases continue, but WS rows are knitted instead of purled: k3, yo, knit to last 3 sts, yo, k3. RS rows are normal increase rows, except Rows 99 and 105, which are eyelet rows: k3, yo, k1, yo, *k2tog, yo* to last 5 sts, k1, yo, k1, yo, k3. You should have 345 sts at the end of Row 112.
5. 5Bind offWith the RS facing, bind off loosely knitwise using a needle one size larger (5 mm). A stretchy edge is essential for the crescent to curve nicely when blocked. Pull the yarn through the last stitch.
6. 6Finishing and blockingWeave the ends into the garter border. Soak the shawl, remove excess water, and pin the neck edge in a gentle curve and the lower edge in a wider curve. Stretch the lower edge slightly to open the eyelet rows. Remove the pins once completely dry.
