Zigzag Knit-Purl Texture Pattern

1. 1Stitch multiple and cast onThe pattern uses a multiple of 6 sts plus one edge stitch each side, i.e. a multiple of 6 + 2. For the swatch, cast on 26 sts (6 x 4 + 2) with 4.5 mm needles. For a neat lower edge, start with 4 rows of garter stitch (knit every row).
2. 2Pattern rows (6-row repeat)Row 1 (RS): k1, *k3, p3; rep from * 4 times, k1. (26 sts) Row 2 (WS): k1, *k2, p3, k1; rep from * 4 times, k1. Row 3: k1, *p2, k3, p1; rep from * 4 times, k1. Row 4: k1, *p3, k3; rep from * 4 times, k1. Row 5: as Row 3. Row 6: as Row 2.
3. 3How the zigzag formsOn each row the block of 3 knit stitches shifts by one stitch: in one direction over rows 1-4, then back over rows 4-6. Seen from the RS, the knit blocks draw a vertical zigzag framed by the purls. Look at your work after each RS row; the knit block should sit one stitch over from the one below.
4. 4Knit the swatchRepeat rows 1-6 six times (36 rows). Then work 4 rows of garter stitch for the top border. With 44 rows in total the piece measures about 15 cm. The count stays at 26 sts throughout, since there are no increases or decreases.
5. 5What to make with itThis zigzag looks handsome on men's scarves, cushion covers and blankets, and both sides look good. For a scarf, cast on 38 sts (6 x 6 + 2; about 19 cm), work 6 garter rows at each end and knit to 160 cm; you'll need about 320 g. For wider pieces simply add repeats and keep the edge stitches.
6. 6FinishingAfter the last garter row, bind off loosely knitwise. Weave in the ends through the edge stitches. Soak the swatch and lay it flat at 13 x 15 cm; knit-purl textures look much crisper after blocking.
