Double Moss Stitch Knitting Pattern

1. 1Stitch multiple and cast onDouble moss is worked over a multiple of 2 sts (an even number) and repeats every 4 rows. For the swatch, cast on 28 sts with 4 mm needles. The fabric lies flat, so no extra edge stitches are needed.
2. 2Pattern rows (4-row repeat)Row 1 (RS): *k1, p1; rep from * to end. (28 sts) Row 2 (WS): *k1, p1; rep from * to end. Row 3: *p1, k1; rep from * to end. Row 4: *p1, k1; rep from * to end. Rows 1-4 form the pattern repeat.
3. 3Understand the logicOn rows 1 and 2 you work the stitches as they appear, knitting the knits and purling the purls, which makes a short strip of rib. On rows 3 and 4 you swap the order, so the little knit and purl blocks alternate like a checkerboard. If you lose your place, look at the last two rows: if two rows look identical stacked up, it's time to swap.
4. 4Knit the swatchRepeat rows 1-4 ten times, for 40 rows in total; the piece will measure about 12.5 cm. Advance your counter after each repeat. The stitch count stays at 28 throughout.
5. 5What to make with itDouble moss is great for cushion covers, baby blankets and chunky cardigan bodies. For a 40 x 40 cm cushion front, cast on 88 sts with the same yarn and work 128 rows (32 repeats); allow about 120 g per side. Keep the stitch count even and the row count a multiple of 4 so the pattern ends neatly at both edges.
6. 6FinishingBind off in pattern as if working the next pattern row. Cut the yarn and weave in the ends through the edge stitches. Dampen the swatch and dry it flat at 13 x 12.5 cm; for cotton blends a light steam is enough.
