Granny Square Cardigan (Crochet)

1. 1Granny squareRound 1: Magic ring; ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc, ch 2, *3 dc, ch 2* 3 times; sl st to top of ch-3. (12 dc, 4 corners) Round 2: Sl st across to the corner space; in the same space ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc; *ch 1, in next corner 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc* 3 times; ch 1, sl st. (24 dc) Round 3: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner, and ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1 in each ch-1 space along the sides. (36 dc) Round 4: Continue the same way. (48 dc) Stop here for S-M. Round 5 (L-XL only): (60 dc) You can change color every round; cut the yarn at a corner and start the new color in a corner space.
2. 2Number of squares and layoutMake 50 squares in total: back 4 x 4 = 16 squares, two fronts each 2 squares wide x 4 squares tall = 16 squares, two sleeves each 3 x 3 = 18 squares. Block the squares to the same size.
3. 3Joining the panelsJoin the squares in the edging color, wrong sides together, with sc through the back loops only or by sewing with a tapestry needle. First make the back panel (4 x 4), the front panels (2 x 4) and the sleeve panels (3 x 3). Join each sleeve panel along one edge to make a tube; the sleeve circumference is 36 (43.5) cm.
4. 4Shoulders and sidesAt the shoulders, join the outer square on each side of the back panel to the outer squares of the fronts; the 2 center squares at the back form the back neck, and the inner top squares of the fronts form the neck edge. At the sides, join front and back for 2.5 squares (30 (36) cm) from the bottom; the top 1.5 squares (18 (22) cm) stay open as the armhole.
5. 5Attaching the sleevesMatch the sleeve seam to the underarm and the opposite point to the shoulder seam. Join the sleeve to the armhole with sc; the sleeve circumference is 36 (43.5) cm and the armhole is 2 x 18 (22) cm, so they match.
6. 6CuffsJoin the edging color at the cuff. Round 1: 48 (56) sc evenly spaced. Round 2: *2 sc, sc2tog* around. (36 (42) sc) Rounds 3-6: 1 sc in each st. Fasten off and weave in.
7. 7Hem and front bandHem: work 4 rows of sc along the bottom edge, 1 sc for each dc and ch. Front band: starting at the lower right front corner, work hdc evenly up the front edge, around the back neck and down the left front; work 4 rows of hdc for a band about 4 cm wide. Work 3 hdc in the same st at the corners to keep the edge flat.
8. 8FinishingWeave all color-change tails into the squares, hiding them among stitches of the same color. Dampen the cardigan and dry it flat.
