1. 1Hem bandCh 88/96/102. Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across (86/94/100 hdc; the skipped 2 ch do not count). Rows 2-4: ch 1 (does not count), sc in back loop only of each st, turn (86/94/100). Rows worked in the back loop form horizontal ridges that look like ribbing.
2. 2BodyFrom row 5: ch 2 (does not count), hdc in each st, turn (86/94/100 hdc). Continue until the body measures 13/15/17 cm from the foundation chain. Sections: each front 21/23/25, back 44/48/50 sts; mark the boundaries.
3. 3First frontRow 1: ch 2, hdc in first 19/21/23 sts, turn (leave the remaining sts unworked). Rows 2 to 11/12/13: decrease 1 st at the neck (front) edge on every row (work the first or last two sts at that edge as hdc2tog); keep the armhole edge straight (9/10/11 sts). Work 1 more row without decreasing (12/13/14 rows in total) and fasten off, leaving a 30 cm tail.
4. 4BackSkip the next 4 sts after the first front for the underarm and join yarn in the following st. Ch 2, hdc 40/44/46, turn. Work a total of 12/13/14 rows straight over these sts. On the last row, the 9/10/11 sts at each end are the shoulders and the center 22/24/24 sts form the back neck.
5. 5Second frontSkip the next 4 sts after the back and join yarn in the following st: ch 2, hdc 19/21/23 (to the end of the body). Work as for the first front, mirrored, with the decreases again at the neck edge (9/10/11 sts). Fasten off, leaving a 30 cm tail.
6. 6Shoulder seamsFold the vest with the wrong side out and join the 9/10/11 shoulder sts of each front to the matching end sts of the back using the tails, either sewing with a yarn needle or with sl st. Turn right side out.
7. 7Edging and button bandRow 1: with RS facing, starting at the lower corner of the first front, sc along the front edge, V-neck, back neck and the other front edge (2 sc into the side of each hdc row, 1 sc into each sc row, 1 sc in each back neck st). Row 2: on the right front for girls or the left front for boys, make 3 buttonholes (1.5 cm above the hem, at the start of the V and halfway between): at each buttonhole ch 2, skip 2 sts, continue in sc. Row 3: sc in each st, 2 sc in each ch-2 space.
8. 8Armholes and finishingJoin yarn at the center of the underarm; work 2 rounds of sc around the armhole, placing 2 sc into the side of each hdc row and 1 sc in each skipped st, and join with sl st. Weave in the ends, dampen the vest and dry flat. Sew the buttons with doubled strong thread, passing through each 6-8 times and wrapping a short shank underneath.
