Crochet Going-Home Set (Hat and Booties)

1. 1Hat: crown increasesEvery round starts with ch 2 (does not count) and is joined with sl st to the first st. Round 1: 8 hdc in a magic ring (8). Round 2: 2 hdc in each st (16). Round 3: *hdc, 2 hdc in next* (24). Round 4: *hdc 2, 2 hdc in next* (32). On the following rounds increase 8 sts per round, working one more hdc before each increase: round 5 40, round 6 48, round 7 56, round 8 64. For 1-3 months, round 9: *hdc 7, 2 hdc in next* (72).
2. 2Hat: bodyWork hdc rounds without increasing (64/72) until the hat measures 11/12 cm from the top. A newborn hat should cover the ears but not come down over the eyes.
3. 3Hat: shell edgeLast round: ch 1, sc in first st, *skip 1 st, shell in next, skip 1 st, sc in next* around; on the last repeat, instead of the final sc, join with sl st to the first sc (16/18 shells). Fasten off and weave in the ends.
4. 4Bootie: rectangleCh 27/31. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (26/30), turn. From row 2: ch 1 (does not count), sc in back loop only of each st, turn. Work 24/28 rows in total. You get a stretchy, ribbed-looking rectangle; the rows run along the length of the bootie.
5. 5Bootie: seam and toeWithout cutting the yarn, fold the rectangle wrong side out so the first and last rows lie on top of each other; join them with sl st through both edges to form a tube. Cut the yarn leaving 30 cm. Thread this tail on a yarn needle, run it through the row ends around one open end of the tube, pull tight and secure with a few firm stitches: this is the toe. Turn the bootie right side out.
6. 6Bootie: cuff edgeJoin yarn at the seam on the other open end of the tube. Round 1: 1 sc in each row end (24/28 sc); sl st. Round 2: ch 1, sc in first st, *skip 1 st, shell in next, skip 1 st, sc in next* around, joining with sl st in place of the final sc (6/7 shells). Make the second bootie the same way.
7. 7FinishingWeave all ends through the stitches on the inside; do not leave a knot inside the toe gathering, or hide it within the stitches. Wash the set gently, dry flat and check the inside before putting it on baby.
