Crochet Mesh (Fishnet) Stitch Pattern

1. 1Stitch multiple and foundationMesh stitch starts on a multiple of 4 ch + 2; each loop uses 4 chains. For the swatch, ch 26 (4 x 6 + 2).
2. 2Row 1Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 5, skip 3 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * 6 times. (7 sc, 6 loops)
3. 3Pattern rows (2-row repeat)Row 2: ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), turn, sc in first ch-5 loop, *ch 5, sc in next loop; rep from * 5 times, ch 2, dc in last sc. (5 full loops, a half loop at each edge) Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in first dc, *ch 5, sc in next full loop; rep from * 5 times, ch 5, sc in 3rd ch of the turning chain. (6 loops) Rows 2 and 3 form the repeat; the half loops on row 2 keep the edges straight.
4. 4Crochet the swatchAfter Row 1, repeat rows 2-3 four times, for 9 rows in total. Always work the sc into the centre of the loop by inserting the hook under the chain, not into a chain stitch, which would distort the loops. The piece measures about 13 cm but stretches a lot when pulled.
5. 5What to make with itMesh is ideal for market bags, beach bags, summer wraps and produce bags. For a market bag, ch 82 (a multiple of 4 + 2; 20 loops, about 45 cm) and work to 80 cm; fold the piece in half and join the sides with sc. Add 5 rows of sc around the opening and two handles of 60 chains covered with sc; you'll need about 150 g of cotton in total.
6. 6FinishingAfter the last row, cut and pull the yarn through, then weave the ends securely through several sc; ends slip out easily in mesh. Soak the swatch, open the loops evenly, lay it flat and let it dry.
