1. 1Front: cast onCast on 86 sts with 5 mm needles. The pattern is an 8-row repeat and the first row is a RS row. The single edge st at each side is the seam allowance (86 sts).
2. 2Front: cable patternRow 1 (RS): k1, *p3, k6* 9 times, p3, k1. Row 2 (WS): p1, *k3, p6* 9 times, k3, p1. Row 3: k1, *p3, C6F* 9 times, p3, k1. Row 4: as row 2. Rows 5-8: work rows 1 and 2 twice. Work these 8 rows 13 times in total (104 rows, 86 sts).
3. 3Front: bind offOn the next RS row bind off in pattern (knit the knits, purl the purls). Do not bind off too tightly; the piece should measure about 39 x 40 cm.
4. 4Back: upper pieceCast on 70 sts. Work 56 rows in stockinette (knit RS rows, purl WS rows). Then work 8 rows of 1x1 rib: every row *k1, p1* 35 times. Bind off in rib (64 rows, 70 sts).
5. 5Back: lower pieceCast on 70 sts. Work 8 rows of 1x1 rib (*k1, p1* 35 times) first, then 56 rows of stockinette, and bind off. Each back piece measures about 39 x 26.5 cm; when assembled they overlap by about 13 cm in the middle.
6. 6BlockingDampen all three pieces in lukewarm water, roll in a towel to remove excess water, and pin flat to size to dry. Do not iron the front, or you will flatten the cables.
7. 7AssemblyLay the front RS up. Place the upper back piece RS down on top, aligned with the top edge, with its rib edge towards the middle; place the lower back piece the same way along the bottom edge. The pieces overlap in the middle. Sew all four edges with backstitch using the yarn needle.
8. 8FinishingTurn the cover right side out through the envelope opening and push the corners out with a finger. Weave the ends into the seam allowances. Insert the cushion through the envelope opening.
