1. 1Dowel casingWith A, cast on 48 sts. Work 16 rows of stockinette (knit RS rows, purl WS rows). This part is later folded in half to make the casing for the dowel (48 sts).
2. 2Edge setupThroughout the body, the first and last 3 sts of every row are always knitted, creating a garter strip at the sides that prevents curling. The patterns below apply to the 42 sts in between. Stockinette: RS row k48; WS row k3, p42, k3. Seed stitch: RS row k3, *k1, p1* 21 times, k3; WS row k3, *p1, k1* 21 times, k3. Garter: knit all sts.
3. 3Body stripesRows 1-14: A, stockinette. Rows 15-30: B, 4 rows garter, 8 rows seed, 4 rows garter. Rows 31-42: C, stockinette. Rows 43-50: A, seed. Rows 51-60: B, stockinette. Rows 61-66: C, garter. Always change colors at the beginning of a RS row (48 sts).
4. 4Bind offWith C, bind off knitwise on the next row. The bottom edge should be neat and firm, as the tassels will be attached here.
5. 5Sewing the casingFold the cast-on edge to the back of the panel and line it up with the back of row 16. With A, sew the cast-on edge to the WS stitch by stitch, leaving both side ends open. Slide the dowel through the casing.
6. 6TasselsCut a total of 72 pieces of yarn, 30 cm long, from the three colors. For each tassel, hold 3 strands (mixed colors) together and fold them in half. Using a hook or your fingers, attach 24 tassels along the bottom edge, one every 2 sts: pull the fold through the st, pull the ends through the loop and tighten. Trim all tassels to the same length.
7. 7Hanging and finishingWeave the ends into the color stripes. Tie a 60 cm length of yarn to both ends of the dowel as a hanger. Dampen the panel, dry it flat and hang it.
