1. 1BodyWith black, start at the top of the head and work in spiral rounds. 2. 2Eyes and closingInsert the safety eyes between rounds 9 and 10 with 8 stitches between them (the belly will start just below the eyes). Stuff the body firmly, pressing the bottom to make a flat base. Rnd 24: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18) Rnd 25: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12) Rnd 26: dec x 6 (6) Gather closed.
3. 3White bellyWith white, make an oval; don't turn the work when working along both sides of the chain. Foundation: ch 8 Rnd 1: starting in the 2nd ch from hook, 6 sc, 3 sc in the last ch, 5 sc along the other side of the chain, 2 sc in the last st (16) Rnd 2: inc, 5 sc, inc x 3, 5 sc, inc x 2 (22) Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc), 5 sc, (1 sc, inc) x 3, 5 sc, (1 sc, inc) x 2 (28) Sl st to finish and leave a long tail.
4. 4Wings, beak and feetWings (make 2, black): Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6) Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) x 3 (9) Rnd 3: (2 sc, inc) x 3 (12) Rnds 4-8: 12 sc (12) Do not stuff; flatten and close with 6 sc through both layers (6). Beak (orange): Rnd 1: 4 sc in MR (4) Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) x 2 (6) Rnd 3: 6 sc (6) Stuff very lightly. Feet (make 2, orange): ch 4; starting in the 2nd ch from hook, 2 sc, 3 sc in the last ch, 1 sc along the other side of the chain, 2 sc in the last st (8).
5. 5AssemblyPlace the belly on the front of the body, wide end down, from just below the eyes to the base (rounds 10-22), and sew it around the edge with close stitches. Sew the beak centered between the eyes at rounds 10-11. Sew the wings to the sides of the body near the edge of the belly between rounds 11 and 17, only along their top part so the tips stay free. Sew the feet to the front of the base, tips sticking out forward.
6. 6FinishingFor children under 3, embroider the eyes with black yarn and outline them with a small ring of white embroidery so they stand out. Weave all yarn ends through the body. If the penguin doesn't stand straight, press the base with your palm to reshape it.
