1. 1Shell circles (make 2)Work two flat circles in spiral rounds, changing color every 2 rounds; the stripes give a spiral shell look. Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6) Rnd 2: inc x 6 (12) Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18) Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24) Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) x 6 (30) Rnd 6: (4 sc, inc) x 6 (36) Rnd 7: (5 sc, inc) x 6 (42) Rnd 8: (6 sc, inc) x 6 (48) Cut the yarn on the first circle and weave in; do not cut it on the second.
2. 2Joining the shellPlace the two circles together with wrong sides facing in. With the yarn of the second circle, work 38 sc through matching stitches of both circles. Stuff the shell so it is plump but still flat, then sc the remaining 10 stitches together through both layers (48). Sl st to finish and leave a long tail for sewing.
3. 3Head and bodyWith the body color, start at the head and work in spiral rounds. Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6) Rnd 2: inc x 6 (12) Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18) Rnds 4-8: 18 sc (18) Insert the eyes between rounds 5 and 6 with 5 stitches between them. Rnd 9: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12) Stuff the head. Rnds 10-25: 12 sc (12) Stuff the body as you go; stuff the last 3 rounds lightly. Flatten the opening and close with 6 sc through both layers (6).
4. 4Antennae (make 2)With the body color: Rnd 1: 5 sc in MR (5) Rnds 2-4: 5 sc (5) Do not stuff; leave a long tail and sew to the top of the head between rounds 2 and 3, with 4 stitches between them.
5. 5AssemblyLay the body flat on the table and lift the head; secure it upright with 2-3 stitches on the underside of the neck curve (rounds 9-11). Stand the shell on its edge on the body between rounds 12 and 20 and sew it all around the edge to the body. Also tack one face of the shell to the front of the body with a few stitches so it doesn't tip sideways.
6. 6Face and finishingFor children under 3, embroider the eyes with black yarn. With pink yarn you can add a short curved smile below the eyes and small cheeks on each side. Weave all yarn ends through the body.
