Crochet Ripple Blanket

1. 1Foundation chain and sc rowWith A, ch 133. Row 1: 1 sc in the 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each remaining ch (132 sc). Turn. This flat row is the base for the waves.
2. 2Ripple rowAll ripple rows are the same: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc2tog over first 2 sts; *1 dc in each of next 3 sts, inc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, dc2tog twice over next 4 sts* 10 times; 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, inc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, dc2tog over last 2 sts. Turn (132 sts). The increases make the peaks and the dc2tog's make the valleys; each row has 11 peaks and a half valley at each edge.
3. 3First stripeWork 4 ripple rows with A (rows 2-5). From the second row the peaks and valleys become clear; each peak must sit above a peak and each valley above a valley.
4. 4Color stripesChange colors in 4-row stripes in this order: B, C, D, A. Pick up the new color while completing the last st of the previous row (pull the final 2 loops through with the new color). Work this 16-row block of B, C, D and A stripes 6 times (96 ripple rows).
5. 5CheckingCount your stitches at the end of each row: there should be 132. If not, the edge dc2tog was usually forgotten or an increase went into the wrong st; a mistake caught within one row is easy to undo.
6. 6Last stripeSo both ends look balanced, finish with 4 more ripple rows in A. In total you will have worked 1 sc row and 100 ripple rows (about 125 cm).
7. 7FinishingCut the yarn and pull it through the last loop. Weave the ends into stripes of the same color. Dampen the blanket and lay it flat; pinning out the peaks and valleys while it dries makes the zigzags crisper.
