1. 1Motif: rounds 1 and 2Make a magic ring. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 15 dc into ring; join with sl st to top of ch-3 (16 dc). Round 2: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2), *1 dc in next dc, ch 2* 15 times; join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-5 (16 dc, 16 ch-2 spaces).
2. 2Motif: round 3 (squaring)Sl st into the first sp; this is the first corner. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp; *ch 2, 1 sc in next sp, ch 3, 1 sc in next sp, ch 3, 1 sc in next sp, ch 2, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next sp* 3 times; ch 2, 1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc, ch 2; join with sl st. Each side has 4 chain spaces (ch 2, ch 3, ch 3, ch 2) (24 dc, 12 sc).
3. 3Motif: round 4Sl st into the corner sp. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp; *ch 1, 3 dc in each of the next 4 spaces with ch 1 between them, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in corner sp* around; join with sl st. Each side has 18 dc including the corner halves and 5 ch-1 spaces (72 dc). Complete the first motif this way.
4. 4Join as you goWork rounds 1-3 of the other 24 motifs the same way; joining happens on round 4. Along an edge that joins a neighbor: - At the corner, instead of ch 3: ch 1, sl st into the neighbor's corner sp, ch 1. - Instead of each ch 1 along the side: sl st into the matching ch-1 sp of the neighbor. If a motif joins on two sides, work both sides this way. Where four motifs meet, sl st into the existing joining sl st.
5. 5LayoutAdd motifs in a 5 x 5 grid, left to right and bottom to top: motifs in the first row join only to their left neighbor, and motifs in later rows join to the neighbors below and to the left. The 25 motifs form the body of the doily (about 40 x 40 cm).
6. 6BorderJoin the yarn at an outer corner. Round 1: 1 sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp, 2 sc at each point where two motifs meet, and 3 sc in each of the four outer corner spaces. Each side has 123 sc plus 3 sc at each corner (504 sc). Round 2: *3 sc, picot* around (168 picots). Join with sl st.
7. 7Blocking and finishingWeave the ends through the dc of the motifs. Wet the doily, squeeze it out, lay it flat and pin out every corner and picot. Starch with spray starch if you like. Remove the pins only when completely dry.
