1. 1Foundation and row 1Ch 66. Row 1: 1 dc in 4th ch from hook and 1 dc in each remaining ch (the skipped 3 ch count as the first dc; 64 sts = 21 filled squares). Turn. In filet every square is 3 sts wide and neighboring squares share a dc, so 21 squares make 64 sts.
2. 2Row structureStart every row with ch 3, which counts as the first dc. Then work the squares in order, and work the last dc of the last square into the 3rd ch of the previous row's turning chain. Every row has 21 squares (64 sts). The single filled square at each edge acts as a frame.
3. 3Row 2F, 19 O, F. Turn. This row starts the open background below the diamonds.
4. 4Diamond pattern (8 rows)a: F, 9 O, F, 9 O, F b: F, 8 O, 3 F, 8 O, F c: F, 7 O, 5 F, 7 O, F d: F, O, F, 4 O, 7 F, 4 O, F, O, F e: as row c f: as row b g: as row a h: F, 19 O, F Every row is 21 squares. On row d a small dot appears on each side of the central diamond.
5. 5Completing the bodyWork the 8-row pattern a-h 9 times (rows 3-74). On row 75 work all squares filled: ch 3, 1 dc in each st (64 sts). Do not cut the yarn.
6. 6BorderRound 1: Work 3 sc in the corner, then go around the runner: 1 sc in each st along the short edges, 2 sc around each row end along the long edges, and 3 sc in each corner. You should have 436 sc. Join with sl st. Round 2: *2 sc, picot* around (218 picots). Join with sl st.
7. 7Blocking and finishingWeave the ends into filled squares. Wet the runner, squeeze it out, lay it flat and pin it so the edges are straight against a ruler; pin out each picot. Remove the pins when dry and starch lightly if you like.
